About Us

Welcome to Rathbone, a charity dedicated to empowering individuals and building stronger communities. For over twenty years, we have been at the heart of supporting young people and adults in achieving their full potential, regardless of the boundaries they face.

At Rathbone, we believe in creating opportunities for growth, independence, and well-being. We take a person-centered approach to everything we do, focusing on the unique strengths and needs of each individual. Through compassionate care, dedicated staff, and strong community partnerships, Rathbone creates a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

What we do

Creating Opportunities

Rathbone is dedicated to creating opportunities for young people and adults with learning disabilities to thrive, recognising the barriers faced in work, education, and social life. We work to support individuals in overcoming the limitations imposed by society by providing inclusive spaces where they can come together, learn, and enjoy themselves.

Our programs focus on building the foundations of a safe and healthy life, empowering individuals to pursue their wider goals with confidence. Through initiatives like work placements at our Hive Café, we offer practical opportunities for people with learning disabilities and autism to gain valuable skills, experience, and independence in a supportive environment.

Elfrida Rathbone’s Legacy

Elfrida Rathbone was a pioneering social reformer dedicated to advocating for education, inclusion, and the rights of people with learning disabilities. Elfrida’s principles of respect, equality, integration, and choice were groundbreaking in her time and remain highly relevant today. While her ideas have influenced progress, much of her work is still needed, as the fight for greater choice, equality, access to services, and better quality of life for people with learning difficulties continues to be essential.

Elfrida pioneered the the central idea that we carry with us in all that we do, that people with learning disabilities and Autism should be given opportunities to thrive based on their strengths, rather than be bound by society’s limitations.
