In August 2017 the gardening group lost its funding and we had to abandon our plot. We recently got some more money and were able to spend 4 weeks working together.
The plots were looking very neglected and there was plenty to do. The good news is that Rosendale Allotments donated a polytunnel so our group can grow plants from seed and have a place to shelter and work when it rains.
We tidied the shed, cleaned it out and put everything back. Then the grass was strimmed and the weeds dug up. We drowned the weeds in the water butt.
Manure was collected from the top of the allotment, where it’s delivered free, and we used it, together with our homemade compost, to top up the beds.
More stones were collected and the new strawberry bed was weeded and enlarged. There are more strawberry runners to plant up this year.
From all of the young people at Rathbone Youth Club we would like to say a massive ‘thank you’! To the local community members in West Norwood for all their support.
It’s not often that local businesses understand the needs of the community and what makes a community a positivity and fun environment for us as young people. So we would like to give a big shout out from all here at Rathbone to our local West Norwood shops Sorrento’s, Tesco, Subway, Pizza Hut, Iceland and Floral Hall! Each of these shops have helped us put on events and activities at our local youth club for disadvantaged and vulnerable young people in the last few months.
We would especially like to give one particular person that is always willing to go the extra mile a huge thank you as even at short notice he has never turned us away even at short notice and that is the store manager Jay at Iceland.
