Accessibility Statement
How we have built this site to be usable by as many people as possible.
Last updated: 11 September 2026
Rathbone Society is committed to making our website usable by as many people as possible, including disabled people and people using assistive technology. We aim to meet the WCAG 2.2 AA standard.
What we have done
Accessibility is built into this site rather than added on top of it:
- Body text is set in Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed by the Braille Institute for readers with low vision.
- Colour combinations are checked against a WCAG AA contrast floor, and body text is set well above it.
- Pages use proper headings, landmarks and semantic HTML, so screen readers can navigate them.
- Every interactive element can be reached and operated by keyboard, with a clearly visible focus outline.
- If your device or browser is set to prefer higher contrast, the site strengthens its borders and text colours to match.
- If you have asked your device to reduce motion, animation on the site stops.
- Links carry meaningful text, images carry alternative text, and layouts are tested on mobile, tablet and desktop.
Our approach
We use a combination of manual checks and automated testing. We deliberately do not use an accessibility overlay or toolbar widget: these tend to sit on top of a site and work around its problems rather than fixing them, and they often test worse than well-built pages. We would rather the underlying site was right. Automated tools do not catch everything, so we welcome feedback from the people who actually use the site.
Compatibility
This site is designed to work with current versions of the major browsers, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Some older browsers or assistive technologies may not support every feature.
Known limitations
We are still working on the following:
- Some older PDF documents may not be fully accessible.
- Some older images carried over from our previous website may be missing descriptive alternative text.
If you come across something that stops you getting to information you need, contact us and we will provide it in a format that works for you.
Feedback and contact
We welcome your feedback on the accessibility of this website. If you experience a problem, need information in a different format, or have a suggestion, please contact:

Preparation of this statement
This statement was prepared on 11 September 2026, when this website was rebuilt, and is based on testing carried out during that rebuild. It will be reviewed at least annually, or whenever we make significant changes to the site.
